Atomly Tracker — User Guide

Atomly Tracker is a music composition tool modeled after classic trackers like Fast Tracker 2 and Impulse Tracker, with modern additions: a clip-based session/arranger view, built-in synthesizers, CLAP/LV2 plugin support, FX chains, automation, and offline WAV/FLAC/OGG/MP3 rendering. It runs as a terminal UI (TUI) on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and in the browser via WebAssembly at atomly.com/tracker.

Quick Start Tutorial

What is a tracker?

A tracker is a step sequencer. You build music by filling a grid — rows are time steps, columns are audio channels — with notes. Press play, and the sequencer reads each row from top to bottom at a fixed tempo. When the pattern ends, it loops or jumps to the next one. This linear, grid-based workflow is very direct: every note you hear corresponds to a cell you can see and edit.

Your first song in 5 minutes

1. Launch and check audio

Start the tracker. You'll see the main layout: Order List (top-left), Pattern Editor (center), Instrument List (right), and Mixer (bottom). If you're on the web version, audio starts automatically. On the desktop, press a to open Audio Settings and confirm your output device is selected, then press Esc.

2. Create an instrument

Press n to add a new instrument. This creates a blank sample-based instrument slot. To give it a sound, press Shift-O to open the file browser and load a WAV or audio file. Navigate with j/k, open folders with l or Enter, and confirm a file with Enter.

Alternatively, create a built-in synth: type :ns 303 and press Enter to create a TB-303-style bass synth, or :ns fm for an FM synth. Press e to open the instrument editor and tweak its parameters. You can also press b or use :pb to open the plugin browser.

3. Enter notes

Press i to enter Insert mode. The cursor turns active. Now use the keyboard as a piano:

Lower octave: z s x d c v g b h n j m
Upper octave: q 2 w 3 e r 5 t 6 y 7 u

Type a few notes — they appear in the pattern. Use j/k (or arrow keys) to move through rows. Press = to place a note-off. Press Esc to return to Normal mode.

4. Play it back

Press Space to play. The playhead runs down the pattern. Press Space again to pause, or . (period) to stop and reset.

5. Add more channels

Your pattern starts with a few channels. Use :addch to add another. Tab between channels with " and ' (or Alt-Tab). Each channel is independent — add a bass line on one, a melody on another.

6. Build an arrangement

Once you have a few patterns, open the Order List (press Ctrl-q or gl). Press n to add entries and set which pattern plays at each position. The sequencer plays through the order list top to bottom.

└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Order List — the song's sequence of patterns. Each entry points to a pattern number.

Pattern Editor — the main editing area. Each column is a channel, each row is a time step. A cell contains: note octave instrument volume pan FX.

Instrument List — lists all instruments in the song. Select with j/k.

Mixer — volume and pan per channel, FX chain access, send buses.

Arranger — a clip-based session view (like Ableton Live's Session View). Press Ctrl-j or gj to open.

Modes

The tracker has three primary input modes, vim-style:

Mode How to enter What it does
Normal Esc from anywhere Navigate, select, issue commands
Insert i Type notes directly into the pattern
Command : Type text commands (:bpm 140, :w, etc.)
Visual v / V Select a range of cells for copy/cut/paste

Pattern Editor

Cell anatomy

Each cell in the pattern editor has these fields (left to right):

C-4 01 .. .. ...
│ │ │ │ └── FX command (effect + param, hex)
│ │ │ └───── Panning (.. = default)
│ │ └──────── Volume (.. = default)
│ └─────────── Instrument number (01, 02, …)
└─────────────── Note + octave  (C-4 = C, octave 4; --- = empty; === = note-off)

You can add up to 8 FX columns per channel with Ctrl+Right or g+.

Note entry keyboard layout

The keyboard maps two overlapping piano octaves:

Upper octave: q 2 w 3 e r 5 t 6 y 7 u i 9 o 0 p
               C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E

Lower octave: z s x d c v g b h n j m
               C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B

FX commands

FX commands are two hex digits entered into the FX column. Common effects:

Command Effect
Axx Set volume to xx (00–FF)
Bxx Jump to order list position xx
Cxx Cut note at tick xx
Dxx Pattern break — jump to row xx of next pattern
ECx Note cut at tick x (within row)
EDx Note delay x ticks before triggering
Oxx Sample offset — start sample at offset xx × 256 samples
Zxx AutoParam — set synth/plugin parameter (see Automation section)

Instruments

Sample instruments

A sample instrument plays back an audio file (WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, MP3, M4A/ALAC). Load a sample with o in the pattern editor or Sample View panel. In the Instrument Editor (e), you can set:

  • Loop start/end points
  • Root note
  • Fine-tune
  • ADSR envelope
  • Note map — assign different samples to different pitch ranges

Built-in synthesizers

Create with :ns <id>. Available synthesizers:

Command Synth
:ns 303 TB-303-style bassline (filter, resonance, env mod, accent)
:ns fm 4-operator FM synthesizer
:ns perc Percussion synthesizer (noise, pitch env, decay)
:ns 808 808/909-style drum machine
:ns multi Multi-oscillator (saw/square/tri/sine + detune)
:ns wt Wavetable synthesizer
:ns gr Granular synthesizer

Open the instrument editor (e) to adjust synth parameters. Save and load presets with Ctrl-S / Ctrl-F or :sp / :lp.

Plugin instruments (native only)

Press b or Ctrl-b to open the Plugin Browser. Navigate with j/k, load with Enter. Supports CLAP, LV2, and VST3 plugins. On macOS/Linux you can open the plugin's native GUI with :gui.

FX Chains

Every channel has an FX chain — a series of effect processors applied to its audio. Open the FX chain editor by pressing e or Enter in the Mixer (gm or ` to focus).

Adding effects

Key Action
a Add next built-in effect (cycles: Gain → EQ3 → Chorus → Delay → Reverb → Flanger → Phaser → Compressor → Limiter → StereoWidth)
A or F4 Open plugin browser to add a CLAP/LV2 effect
s Add a send tap (routes signal to a send bus)

Built-in effects

  • Gain — volume and gain trim
  • EQ3 — 3-band equalizer (low/mid/high shelf)
  • Chorus — modulated multi-voice chorus
  • Delay — tempo-synced or free-time delay
  • Reverb — algorithmic reverb
  • Flanger — comb-filter flanger
  • Phaser — all-pass phase shifter
  • Compressor — dynamics compressor with threshold/ratio/attack/release
  • Limiter — brick-wall limiter
  • StereoWidth — mid/side stereo width control

Adjusting parameters

Tab to the parameter pane. j/k selects a parameter, h/l adjusts it fine, H/L adjusts it coarser. Snap to min/mid/max with 0/5/9.

Using CLAP/LV2 plugin effects (native only)

Press A or F4 in the FX chain editor to open the plugin browser filtered to effect plugins. Navigate with j/k, press Enter to load. The plugin is added as a new slot in the chain.

Once loaded, Tab to the parameter pane to see and edit the plugin's parameters with h/l (fine) or H/L (coarse). To open the plugin's native GUI window (if it has one), select the slot and press Enter, then use :gui-open or the context menu.

To replace a plugin in a slot, select the slot and press O (Shift-o) to reopen the browser.

FX chain presets (entire chains including plugin slots) can be saved with Ctrl-S and reloaded with Ctrl-F.

Slot controls

Key Action
b Bypass slot on/off
d or Del Delete slot
K / J Move slot up / down
O (Shift-o) Replace plugin in selected slot
- / = Wet/dry mix ±5%
[ / ] Input gain ±1 dB
Ctrl-S Save entire FX chain as a preset
Ctrl-F Load a saved FX chain preset

Mixer

Press ` or gm to focus the Mixer. Each strip corresponds to a channel. Use h/l to move between strips, j/k to adjust volume.

  • m — mute channel
  • s — solo channel
  • r — rename channel
  • Shift-R — open send routing editor
  • e or Enter — open FX chain editor for this channel
  • Ctrl-Shift-C — add a new send bus

The M strip is the master bus. Send buses appear to its right.

Send Buses

Send buses let you route multiple channels through shared FX (e.g. a reverb return). In the FX chain editor, press s to add a send tap on a channel. In the Mixer, Shift-R opens the send editor where you set levels and pre/post-fader mode.

Arranger / Session View

Press Ctrl-j or gj to open the Arranger. This is a clip launcher similar to Ableton Live's Session View — a grid of scenes (rows) × tracks (columns).

  • Each cell can hold a pattern clip (a pattern from your song) or an audio clip (a looping sample)
  • c — place current pattern as a clip at the cursor
  • o — load an audio file as a sample-loop clip
  • Space or . — launch/stop clip at cursor
  • / or S — launch entire scene row
  • = — stop clip on cursor track
  • 0 — stop all clips
  • Enter — open clip editor for the cell
  • a or + — add new scene row
  • x or Del — remove clip from cell

In the Clip Editor (Enter on a cell):

  • Set clip type (Audio ↔ Pattern), loop length, gain, stretch mode
  • T toggles clip type
  • o loads a new audio file (audio clips)
  • . previews the clip
  • h/l nudge numeric values

Automation

Automate any synth or FX parameter per pattern row using the Zxx FX command or Automation Lanes.

Zxx inline automation

In Insert mode, navigate to an FX column (add one with Ctrl+Right if needed). Press Ctrl-P to open the synth param picker — a list of all parameters on the current instrument. Select a parameter with j/k and press Enter; the editor inserts a Zxx command at the current row.

The encoding: Z = command type, first hex nibble = parameter index, second hex nibble = value (0–F mapped to 0%–100%). You can also type the hex digits directly into the FX column. When your cursor rests on a Zxx cell, the status bar shows the parameter name and current value.

To ramp a parameter smoothly over a range of rows: set a Zxx value at the start row and another at the end row, enter Visual mode (v), select those rows, then press I to interpolate — the editor fills in evenly spaced values between them.

Automation lanes

Automation lanes give you per-row control over any parameter, shown as a bar graph alongside the pattern. They are tied to a specific parameter on a specific instrument or FX slot.

Opening a lane:

  • F11 or gA — open the Automation Editor for the current instrument (lists all lanes on that instrument)
  • Or: open the Parameter Editor (Ctrl-P / gP), navigate to any parameter, press a — opens that parameter's lane directly

Editing a lane:

Key Action
j / k Navigate rows
J / K Jump 8 rows
h / l Value ±0.05
H / L Value ±0.1
1–9 Set value 0.1–0.9
0 Set value 1.0 (max)
d / Del Clear point at row
Enter Toggle: set 1.0 or clear
v Enter visual mode to select a range
I (visual mode) Interpolate values linearly across selected range
Ctrl-S Save lane to file
Ctrl-F Load lane from file
Esc Close automation editor

FX chain parameter automation: FX slot parameters can also be automated. In the FX chain editor, navigate to a parameter in the param pane and press a to open its automation lane. The lane drives that parameter each row during playback.

Web / WASM Version

The tracker runs in the browser at atomly.com/tracker with no installation required. It is the same application compiled to WebAssembly, with a few differences:

What works the same

  • Full pattern editor, order list, instrument list, mixer, arranger
  • All built-in synthesizers (303, FM, perc, 808, multi, wavetable, granular)
  • All built-in FX chain effects
  • Automation lanes and Zxx commands
  • Song save/load, offline WAV render
  • Lua plugins (bundled — no install needed)

What is different or unavailable

Feature Web version
CLAP / LV2 / VST3 plugins Not available — native binary only
Plugin GUI windows Not available
File system access Uses browser file picker dialogs instead of a path
Audio latency Higher than native (browser Web Audio API limitation)
MIDI input Not available in current web build
Sample rate / buffer size Controlled by the browser, not the app

File operations in the browser

Because the browser sandboxes file system access, file operations use the browser's native file picker:

  • Open song: press Shift-O or Ctrl-O or :e — a file picker dialog opens; select a .trk file
  • Load sample: press o — file picker for audio files (WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, MP3, M4A)
  • Save song: press Ctrl-S or :w — the browser downloads the .trk file to your Downloads folder
  • Export WAV: :render song — downloads the rendered WAV file

Songs are not stored in the browser between sessions. Save your work with Ctrl-S and keep the downloaded .trk file; reload it next time with o.

Performance notes

The first load may take several seconds while the browser downloads and instantiates the WebAssembly module (~8 MB, gzip-compressed). Subsequent loads are faster due to browser caching. Audio processing runs on the browser's audio thread and is generally reliable for typical song complexity.

Tips

  • Panic button: ; stops everything immediately — all notes off, transport stopped, all overlays closed.
  • Follow mode: gF toggles follow-playback, which scrolls the pattern editor to track the playhead.
  • Loop a selection: In visual mode, select rows, then go to loop just that range.
  • Interpolate automation: Select a range in visual mode, set a start and end value, then press I to fill in smooth values between them.
  • Clone a channel: :cc duplicates a channel including its notes, FX chain, and automation. Use --no-notes to copy only the FX chain to a new channel.
  • Jump to row: In command mode, type a number (:32) to jump the cursor to that row.
  • Context menus: Right-click or press F10 / gc almost anywhere for panel-specific actions.
  • The jam view (* or \): A floating piano overlay that stays open over any panel so you can play notes while navigating.
